Saturday afternoon doledrums: Gray skies

Ratings for the first in the series of 2008 presidential debates didn't get as high of ratings as many people thought it would--it was behind in numbers when compared to Bush vs Kerry. Maybe someone ought to think: It was on .. on a Friday night. Some of the lowest ratings came from New York City and Los Angeles.. Again, big cities.. Friday night. That economic depression must not have hit yet.. And speaking of the coming end of the world *.. probably not .. * Lawmakers are working the weekend (along with millions of other Americans so don't feel bad) to try to get the bailout bill through Congress and to the President's desk.. BEFORE THE MARKETS self-destruct!!!! But now, some more calming news from around the world: Enjoy Saturday and don't drink too much, you have to wake up tomorrow on the Sunday morning sidewalk: I don't even understand what to think of this: UCLA group discovers 13-million-digit prime number.. Maine watches Hurricane Kyle.. Botch up: Hosiptal tells 71-year-old grandfather that he's pregnant! Fall is here: Cold snap to begin next week.. Teen hired men to kill his mother--so he could get breast implants for his girlfriend! Students suspended after morning bacon barbecue on school grounds.. Man his his penis amputated without consent.. .. Who would concede that one? How to spot liberals and conservatives in an office.. Update: Chinese milk now banned in Asia, Africa, and European Union.. And watch out for "Mr Brown" instant coffee.. RIP Paul Newman.. never forgotten..

THAT'S A WRAP: FIRST DEBATE BETWEEN THE CANDIDATES

The 20th Century Boy scores some punches against newbie Barack.. The race is here: An old man saying he knows more than a young man.. A young man shaky on some issues that the old man seems to be purposely acting more knowledgeable about. This is the opposition year like 1980. Did Obama pass the threshold that Reagan passed in 1980? Will America notice that McCain got the name of the leader of Pakistan wrong? Will America appreciate the sarcastic humor of McCain, or feel bad for Obama, as my parents clearly do. They told me. The wrap: Repeatedly, Obama said he agreed with Senator McCain..
  • The war over bracelets: Who had one first?
  • How will McCain's "doesn't understand" comments play?
  • McCain takes Obama on with the issue of pork and spending.. Obama turns to McCain and challenges him on the run up to the Iraq war..
  • War over taxes and foreign policy take precedence..

WE ALL SCREAM "AT" ICE CREAM: MOM'S MILK??

You're never too old for ice cream.. right?

    Well..

PETA argues that human breast milk should be used to make ice cream!

PETA officials say a move to breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their calves on factory farms and benefit human health

Forget the cows! You want to do this to women? If it's torture to you to do this to livestock, why would it be any kinder to get human women to herd together and get milked?

Can't we go back to PETA's old fashioned argument of just stopping milk and dairy consumption?

Ben and Jerry came to the rescue in a statement:
Ben & Jerry's said: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."

I'll stick with the cows, too...

George Stephanopoulos reports that Paulson worries that the bailout could be falling apart..
Paulson walked into the room where Democrats were caucusing after today's meeting at the White House and pleaded with them, "Please don't blow this up." Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chair of the House Financial Services Committee was livid saying, "Don't say that to us after all we've been through!" SO MUCH BAD NEWS, SO LITTLE TIME DIRE WARNINGS OVER ECONOMIC HEALTH OF NATION KNIGHT BERNANKE/KING HENRY APPEAR BEFORE SKEPTICAL SENATE
The latest in the bad news about the economy column: A column expanding more and more, as the stock market slips by the day.. Dire warnings came from Ben Bernake and Henry Paulson on Capitol Hill today, warning that the Senate and House must vote yes on the $700 bil (try trillion) bailout plan, stating that if not dire consequences await the already fragile nation. The Senate Banking Committee appeared unlikely to give Paulson the immediate and broad power he wants, Senator Shelby commented that the Senate needs to look to some alternatives. Senators from both the Democrat and Republican parties appear to be unlikely to must rapidly in passing the bailout measure--one that will be backed up by the deep pocketed *rigggghhht* American taxpayers. In a stunning moment today, Senator Chris Dodd commented on the bailout measure: "After reading this proposal, I can only conclude that it is not only our economy that is at risk, Mr. Secretary, but our Constitution, as well".. Senator Jim Bunning said, "It’s financial socialism, and it’s un-American".. Un-American? The Constitution is at risk? Without being a financial expert, it's obvious that the measure is not free-market. It's not capitalism, but instead is trying to rescue capitalism before the greed and excessive nature of capitalism destroys itself. The Roaring 20s saw the same greed and mismanagement. .this time the federal government is trying to hedge off the second Great Depression--and .. are we teetering on the edge of this? Not to cause further rampant speculation, but the fact that the government is getting involved to such a high degree shows the extent of chaos and turmoil we are on the edge of. The bailout plan appears to be hated--by everyone--including the authors! Paulson said, "It's embarrassing to look at this, and I think it's embarrassing to the United States of America" Embarrassing for the United States of America.. But what about the Constitution? Is Treasury readying the shredders? And if you're not worried yet? Think of this: The UNITED NATIONS is calling for global leadership during bad economic times, China wants a new world currency, and Iranian president Ahmadinejad said today that America is nearing collapse.. Worried now? Think about it...

Words of wisdom from Ron Paul during economic crisis

"The government must divorce itself of the albatross of Fannie and Freddie, balance and drastically decrease the size of the federal budget, and reduce onerous regulations on banks and credit unions that lead to structural rigidity in the financial sector. Until the big-government apologists realize the error of their ways, and until vocal free-market advocates act in a manner which buttresses their rhetoric, I am afraid we are headed for a rough ride."

    NIGHTMARE SCENARIO!? PRESIDENT NANCY PELOSI?

AFP/File/Paul J. Richards If the electoral count is 269 to 269, Nancy Pelosi could assume the highest office in the world.. the BBC expands on the possibilities..
Given the results in 2000 and 2004, when Michigan and Pennsylvania voted Democratic, it is not unreasonable to assign them to Obama, bringing him to 260, just 10 votes short of the White House. While Obama has a real chance to win in Colorado, Ohio, and Virginia, all three states have tended to vote Republican in many or most election years.
...Think about what House selection of a president would mean today. Gargantuan California would have the same single House vote in choosing the new president as sparsely populated Wyoming, even though California has about 70 times its population. The votes of the mega-states of Florida, New York, and Texas could be cancelled out by the tiny populations of Montana, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. Furthermore, large state delegations could internally deadlock via tie votes. Some large states might be deprived even of their single vote for the presidency. Tens of millions of people could be disenfranchised in this fashion.

A tale of two VPs: Poor Joey B: Saying all the wrong things, our Sarah, just smiling for the camera

Rumors abound: Hillary will be Barack's October surprise!
    But that's fiction. Right?
But a few Biden moments may be causing some uneasy moments in the Obama inner circle: Biden says anti-McCain ad was wrong, he said no coal plants in America, and he mentioned FDR led when the stock market crashed, impossible for several reasons..

And in Palinmania news, our Sarah appeared with world leaders for photographers, but not reporters...

Code red! Homeland Security can read minds!? The best intentions.. often go awry

Science fiction got boring. Reality is scary. According to FOX NEWS there is a new federal computer program called MALINTENT. It's the 'brain child' (not pun intended?) of the Human Factors Division of Homeland Security .. and according to the designers and reporters that are quietly spreading the story, the program searches a human body for clues that could predict a terror attack. The miracle of technology:
But this is no polygraph test. Subjects do not get hooked up or strapped down for a careful reading; those sensors do all the work without any actual physical contact. It's like an X-ray for bad intentions
The best intentions of men often go awry. Perhaps the best intentions look bad. Would the Human Factors Division be able to tell the difference? The story goes on:
This whole security array — the scanners and screeners who make up the mobile lab — is called "Future Attribute Screening Technology" — or FAST — because it is designed to get passengers through security in two to four minutes, and often faster. If you're rushed or stressed, you may send out signals of anxiety, but FAST isn't fooled. It's already good enough to tell the difference between a harried traveler and a terrorist. Even if you sweat heavily by nature, FAST won't mistake you for a baddie.
Feeling uneasy yet? Anyone else worried? Worried.. for me is Newspeak for damn creeped out.

THE FINAL DAY OF SUMMER: THE SUNDAY MORNING SIDEWALK

The last sunrise on summer 2008--forever a memory soon to be distant. Today is the final full day of summer, fleeting hours as the sun above isn't as warm on the earth as it was a few weeks ago.. No more fireflies in the humid summer night air.. No more smell of barbecues from distant neighbors blocks away.. no more care-free clothing.. It's fall 2008. The autumnal equinox only hours away, as fall will begin tomorrow.
