THE LONG GOODBYE: THE PICTURE PERFECT LOVE STORY OVER, PUTIN SAYS BYE TO DUBYA
PHOTO CREDIT: AP Photo/RIA Novosti, Presidential Press Service, Vladimir Rodionov

Life .. and death .. by blogging

I read the New York TIMES story about bloggers dying young deaths, staying up too late, getting fat or skinny, and making lots of money.. I can't say I relate. The TIMES reports,
"It is unclear how many people blog for pay, but there are surely several thousand and maybe even tens of thousands. The emergence of this class of information worker has paralleled the development of the online economy. Publishing has expanded to the Internet, and advertising has followed.
Don't think I can be included here. I blog to report, vent, give thought, re-tell what I find important.. The TIMES goes on:
"Blogging has been lucrative for some, but those on the lower rungs of the business can earn as little as $10 a post, and in some cases are paid on a sliding bonus scale that rewards success with a demand for even more work. There are growing legions of online chroniclers, reporting on and reflecting about sports, politics, business, celebrities and every other conceivable niche. Some write for fun, but thousands write for Web publishers — as employees or as contractors — or have started their own online media outlets with profit in mind. "
I first began my life online in 1999 .. a meager ridiculous personal Angelfire website.. Moved on to the Horror-Report.com (I still applaud myself for beating Drudge by about ten seconds in reporting the World Trade Center being attacked and I was almost sued by Janeane Garofalo's personal photographer in 2004) .. I moved on to Schmuckraker.com, then to this cheap version of the site on Blogger.com. It's free. I am not gaining profit or money by this site.. Not sure if I ever will. It doesn't appear enough people really actually even like me enough to make money off of it. The TIMES continues:
"Bloggers at some of the bigger sites say most writers earn about $30,000 a year starting out, and some can make as much as $70,000. A tireless few bloggers reach six figures, and some entrepreneurs in the field have built mini-empires on the Web that are generating hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. Others who are trying to turn blogging into a career say they can end up with just $1,000 a month. Speed can be of the essence. If a blogger is beaten by a millisecond, someone else’s post on the subject will bring in the audience, the links and the bigger share of the ad revenue."
Again.. Can't say I fall within this category. I work two jobs.. this is my third to a degree since it does take some energy. But I'm not a 24/7 update by any stretch of the imagination.. Maybe that's why the cash isn't flowing in.. I guess death by blogging won't be in the cards for me. Neither will cash for blogs. But at least I can say it's just me here. No one else editing me, telling me what to report or decide.. It's all Schmuck, all the time. When I bother to update. . . Even sometimes on a quiet Saturday night will I wait for my wife to come home from work..

Way back when when America was at peace, George W. Bush's first meeting with Vladimir Putin ended up with the President saying he peered into the eyes of Putin, and saw his soul. Years later, Bush may need to thoughtfully question his inane abilities to read people. The President began a farewell call as hope for major agreement on missile defense in talks with Putin were abandoned by the White House.. Bush soon will have his few remaining months to look deep into the soul of Dmitry Medvedev.. No word on official nickname replacement from the White House. Pooty Poot leaves May 7..

RANDOM RAKINGS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

I thought about releasing my tax returns in PDF form just for fun today. I ruled against it. Too many scandals. People will see I have two jobs and make little money even when they're combined. Nonetheless, the random rakings of the day submitted for your Schmuck raked approval:

China fears more protests of Olympic torch .. shootings in Tibet

TIME MAG: THE 'AMERICAN POPE'

TIME magazine runs cover story on why they think the Pope love America:
"The Pope's admiration for the U.S. has deep roots. Unlike John Paul II, who was intellectually and theologically fully formed when he met his first Americans, Ratzinger first observed them when he was 18. As a defeated German soldier, he spent three months in a pow camp but was then allowed to return home and witness one of the great modern acts of charity, the rebuilding of Germany by an occupying force that could just as easily have exacted revenge. Cardinal William Levada, the Californian whom Benedict tapped as his successor at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), says, "He's of a generation that remembers, gratefully." "

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ON CLINTON TAX RETURNS

Classic 1990s Clinton move: Release information late on a Friday so no one cares by Monday. But with the amount of information contained in the just released Clinton tax returns that journalists and Clinton critics are now going through, the theory may not work.. While there don't seem to be bombshells or scandalous financial irregularities, the tax returns show that the Clintons are really, really rich. In the past eight years, the Clintons at a couple earned about $109 million dollars. The New York TIMES reporting additional information about charitable deductions:
"During that time, the Clintons paid $33.8 million in federal taxes and claimed deductions for $10.2 million in charitable contributions. The contributions went to a family foundation run by the Clintons that has given away only about half of the money they put into it, and most of that was last year, after Mrs. Clinton declared her candidacy." xxx The pace of the Clintons’ own charitable giving, which peaked last year at $3 million, has not always kept up with their income, and by at least one measure, has sometimes fallen short of the spirit of the 5 percent goal, which is to get money into the hands of charities that do good works. In 2002, for instance, they reported income totaling $9.5 million and $115,000 in gifts to charity. In other years, they have given much larger amounts to their family foundation, but it has yet to disburse all of the money. The Clintons took a tax deduction in 2004 for $2.5 million in charitable gifts, $2 million of which went to their family foundation, which as a tax-exempt nonprofit is considered a charity under the tax code. That same year, the foundation gave away just $221,000 to charitable groups, according to its tax return."
Reading the reactions to the Clinton return release, I can only thank God that I am not in politics. The fact of little to no privacy in your entire monetary and personal history is a little creepy to me. While I understand the importance of the tax return filings as a showcase of a candidate, I think perhaps it can sometimes go too far in prying into history. What I do, however, find fascinating is the rags to riches story the Clintons have.. It's a fine showcase of the new form of classism that exists in America: Rich and poor. Obama, Clinton, and McCain are all pretty wealthy, while most of the people in America really aren't.. But all three wealthy candidates of the upper class tell the middle and lower Americans they feel the pain of the poor. The election, especially with ongoing economic downturn in America, will be about which wealthy candidate America can believe in. The millionaires club versus the paycheck to paycheck generation. Savings versus cravings. Lobster versus canned tuna. Once again I thank my lucky stars I'm not in the sleaziest game in history. One last point that I thought was amazing: The Clinton returns went early to Drudge before the release at 4pm. It gave Drudge a few hours to view them before anyone else. When will someone in the MSM realize Drudge is the most powerful journalist of the 21st century?

A dream turns into a nightmare for McCain over MLK holiday vote

John McCain went to the Christian Leadership Conference in Memphis to commemorate the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr...Standing outside of the Lorraine Motel, John McCain's speech ended up being a heckling match between him and listeners. McCain, himself anyone making him do it, announced that he was "wrong" when he first voted against a Martin Luther King Day holiday .. The crowd was hardly mixed with their reactions.. though a few yelled, "We forgive you," McCain faced more anger than forgiveness. McCain had said at the time he voted against the bill because it cost too much..The Democratic National Committee was not sold on the McCain apology .. It's pretty interesting that McCain brought it up himself. But of course politically he had to. His vote against the holiday was sure to come up on its own, especially when he stands in front of the hotel where the civil rights hero was gunned down some 40 years ago. If you can see through the umbrellas, here is a video of the speech:

A FEW MORE RANDOM RAKINGS FOR THE NIGHT

A late one tonight .. Just got done work at the second job.

However, my second job added a lot of good information to the ongoing research I am conducting about Obama and race and the state of Pennsylvania. I truly promise that story is coming..

Meanwhile, the random rakings of the day, submitted for your Schmuckraking approval:

They're pushing 40, but the New Kids on the Block Plan on reuniting.. Old Men in the Walkers soon to be..

Hugo Chavez/Mickey Mouse photo floats on news wires..

Pregnant man appears on Oprah, talks about his miracle baby, and says he has sexual relations with his wife.. Oh what a tangled web we weave..

New report questions aspartame and brain health..

Yadda Yadda Whatta?! Seinfeld's near tragic car accident: Laughed off..

Cell Phone Industry takes aim at iPhone..

Predictions have been wrong before, nonetheless, noted hurricane forecaster expects busy season..

Myspace and record companies create music site..

Forget rock: Myspace generation having acoustic boom..

Like a horror movie: Tundra thaw releasing infected corpses that scientists fear could spread the smallpox virus!

Arlen Spector: At arm's length

First joked about several days ago on the DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart, Arlen Spector today said that he put photograph of him shaking hands with George W. Bush to illustrate the reaction he got when he was undergoing chemotherapy.. Watch the clip

$$ OBAMA $$

His poll numbers continue their rise in the Keystone State despite questions as to whether Pennsylvania is ready to vote for an African American (I promise, I am doing research on this and will publish it soon)..

And now, Barack Obama's campaign has been boosted by new numbers released, showing he raised twice as much as Hillary Clinton!

Even more amazing: Obama has attracted nearly 1.3 million donors, largely through the Internet. He has raised $131 million in just the first three months of this year to $70 million for Clinton///

$40 mil of the money was in March, compared to $20 mil for Hillary.

John McCain, who appears to have the new nickname of "Gramps" on several blogs, raised $23 mil in Jan - Feb .. March numbers have not been released. Maybe there's a reason for that.

New Olympic sport: Torch matches

xxx The battle over the 2008 China Olympics intensified today as anti-Chinese protesters targeted the torch ceremony .. As the Olympic flame continues around the world, it's greeted with hostility over Chinese human rights violations and the treatment of Tibetan Monks. It's not just games in 2008 xxx

I promised

A dedicated reader and Madonna fan asked for me to post this piece of information: Madonna beats previously held record by Elvis Presley ..

Posted.

Ok, I admit it of course, it's pretty big news. Legendary songs falling by the wayside to a track titled "4 Minutes" ..

But a Madonna related story that the dedicated reader didn't ask me to post that I am still going to: The Material Mother vows to never be fat

MCCAIN GETS THE SCRIPT ON LETTERMAN

This time, writers for Letterman gave McCain the script.. Actually one of the funnier Letterman moments in recent years. Though McCain, when trying to be funny, still appears creepy..

RANDOM RAKINGS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

A baseball fan with a hat shaped like a hot dog watches from the stands prior to opening day action between the New York Mets and the Florida Marlins in National League baseball action in Miami, Florida March 31, 2008. REUTERS/Hans Deryk
(UNITED STATESBen Bernanke said he thought America was possibly going to be in recession. The market responded. As did America. While the commerce didn't stop, the teeth on Wall Street chattered.. If you thought drinking water could keep you healthy through a recession, probably not happening. Scientists today practically dismissed the legendary fact that drinking lots of water will benefit you. Instead, they say, it's mostly a myth. In celebration, I had an iced coffee tonight at the Lazy Dog Coffeehouse in Minersville.. Drinking water may not help, but neither do cigarettes.. ..but is there a genetic link to the habit? From Florida: Doubts over possibility of third grade plot to harm teacher.. Bill Clinton outright major league pissed off about Bill Richardson endorsement of Barack Obama.. . .Reports that his temper flared when he was asked about it. From Thailand: Cosmetic castration banned .. "Ladyboys" no more.. Crisis for geeks (and me): iPhone shortage! This was CBS: Budget cuts and staffer layoffs.. The new world of news. Who will report on the upcoming American depression when there are no reporters on the payroll? Woman charged with stocking John Cusack..

World Autism Day

April 2, 2008: World Autism Day. . . Jenny McCarthy just appeared on Larry King Live. I felt bad for her not for her situation, but because she had to try to intelligently interact with Larry King. Though the day was supposed to draw awareness, a few Schmuckraker readers dismissed not only the ailment but one reader was critical of women over 40 that have children. The argument over how autism starts is persistent. But the kids who have it are kids.. worthy of life and respect. So much so that they also deserve an answer: Is it vaccines.. is it genetics? is it both? Time is of the essence. And the clock is ticking..

She's ok! Jessica Simpson treated and released from hospital for kidney condition..

xxx All this time I was critical of my wife for buying lots of shoes, now I see why it matters .. Apparently purchasing a lot of sneakers a sign that you're a leader. For my part, I've had the same two pairs (one Nike's and one Skechers) for four years. Follow I must..

If I missed news, I am sorry. Maybe it's my depression over the coming Depression.. wait.. what did the Stock Market get to today? Where's the plunge?

Super delegate strategy revealed (not that it appears it was hidden)

Three words: Reverend Jeremiah Wright

Harold Ickes confirmed to the Talking Points Memo today that Wright's words will be central in the fight over the super delegates..

According to the TPM site:
"In a reference to Wright's controversial views, Ickes continued: "Nobody thinks that Barack Obama harbors those thoughts. But that's not the issue. The issue is what Republicans [will do with them]...I think they're going to give him a very tough time." "

Ducking the Lewinsky cloud The scandal that has more staying power than a stain on a blue dress, Chelsea Clinton continues to face questions from people concerning the Monica Lewinsky scandal.. MORE >> Unwelcome questions about the 1990s scandal continue to follow Chelsea Clinton's stops .. She's facing the questions in North Carolina and Pennsylvania.. Schmuckraker take: Unfair in essence to bring up these old wounds. While it may be fair for the Clinton parents to answer questions, it is slightly icky to sit through questioning of daughter Clinton about Monica. She was a kid.. as old as me. I was a senior in high school when Bill Clinton put cigars in the nether region of an intern.. There's no reason Chelsea Clinton should answer for the sins of her father in 2008.

(*By the way, it looks like the VIEW ladies agree .. perhaps that means I wouldn't fidget on the show?*)

Come on out! Another failed end of the world prediction

This one, though, didn't end with mass suicide or crazed killings. Instead, Russian cult members have emerged from a cave they were in waiting for the end times in May. They said that God told them to leave the cave.

God or snow?

According to officials, melting snow had caused parts of the cave to collapse..

As far as the May ending.. the Schmuckraker won't be entering a cave to hide out any time soon..

STUCK IN BASRA: BRITISH TROOPS CALL OFF TROOP REDUCTION PLANS Britain froze plans to withdraw 1500 troops from Iraq due to increasing violence in Southern city of Basra.. Britain had originally planned to hand over more power to the Iraqi government.. but as violence increases, a change in plans occurred, causing the delay.. The surge in Shiite militia violence has now forced British troops into combat role for first time since last year.. Basra relatively calm following a peace deal between Shiite militia and government// but Britain and everyone else waiting to see if peace deal holds..

OCD: GOD ADDICTION

ABC NEWS REPORTS ABOUT THE MAN THAT CAN'T STOP PRAYING..

The fools of April While I know that April Fools' day has some historical meaning, it's outright frustrating when real media sources perform their annual tradition of offering up fake news story and then saying "just kidding" at the end. The jokes' intentions are to be frivolous. Fine. But the majority are rarely humorous. This morning my morning commute to work got extended a bit longer due to some traffic congestion. I tuned into an AM radio station that offers a horribly dull morning show .. I'll leave in nameless to protect the innocent. Nonetheless, the radio show's prank this morning went on for 2 and a half hours. The running gag, you ask? A new North American currency called the "Amero" will be rolled out July 4. It was passed by the United States Congress, and the governments of Mexico and Canada, last night. While it wasn't particularly funny, even less humorous were the throngs of callers phoning in that took it seriously.. which of course led us all down that paved road to racism. Anti-Mexican comments quickly got spewed. "They took our jobs, might as well take out money," one caller to the show said. I got to work before the hosts were able to announce that it was a prank. Of course they were not the only ones to do it. But the more I saw it today the more annoyed I got. I wish it would be a tradition that would end. After all, the real news is sometimes unbelievable enough.

Clock ticking? On the trail of autism's future.. HUFFINGTON POST's David Kirby continues his extensive research of autism on the Huffingtonpost.com ..
"The teleconference was scheduled by a little known CDC agency called the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) Network, a consortium of six research centers working on "immunization-associated health risks," in conjunction with the CDC's Immunization Safety Office and the health insurance lobby -- whose companies cover some 200 million Americans. The hot topic of the day was mitochondria - the little powerhouses within each cell that convert food and oxygen into energy for use by the body. Recent news events have implicated mitochondria in at least one case of regressive autism, following normal development. Some researchers on the call reported that mitochondrial dysfunction is probably much more common than the current estimate of 1-in-4,000 people. The potential implications for autism, then, are staggering. "We need to find out if there is credible evidence, theoretically, to support the idea that childhood mitochondrial dysfunction might regress into autism," one of the callers reportedly told participants."
In a related story, thanks to Lorri Unumb, "Ryan's Law" will soon take effect in South Carolina.. While most medical insurance companies don't cover kids with autism, the Unumb fight has led to the new law in SC that will mandate insurers to cover autism treatment..

The great food repression Recession or not, depression or not (and stock markets skyrockets or downtrodden days) the economy is not great right now. So not great that food prices are greatly rising.. Economic choices that Americans are making are now becoming price dependent. With gas prices on the rise and basic necessities up, latest research shows that more Americans are eating at home instead of restaurants. More Americans are also buying in bulk. Eating healthy is also getting pricey. Fruit and vegetable costs are higher this year than previous years.. Lunch at work is evolving to: More brown bags and less empty wallets at restaurants.. It's a changing economy.. As far as staying home to eat instead of restaurants.. Soon will it be comparable to do both? Scary thought. Hungry thoughts.

ROCKY .. Starring Hillary Clinton..

As if the attention she got making Bosnia related comments weren't enough, today Hillary Clinton compared herself to Rocky... Over and over again. A whole portion of her speech about how she never backs down and never gets up ..

The door now open to mockery again.

Rocky, of course, is a fictional character.. and is looked upon by the city of Philadelphia as a real emblem of bravery and courage.

A fictional character in a city filled with real people is the only honest hard fighting man that people can turn to.
And Hillary.

Bring on the soup lines.

FIDGETING ON THE VIEW Jay Leno counts the numbers of times Barack Obama shows his nervousness..

Non depression related random rakings

There's more than just bad news in the world: There's terrible news. And some good and ok stuff too. While the UK papers talk about the Great Depression in the United States, the Schmuckraker offers you the random rakings of the day from around the late night world of love:

Polls tightening up in Pennsylvania .. Obama now in striking distance of Hillary Clinton according to new data, only a few points away. Single digits in the Keystone state..

And while the polls sink, April Fools joke from Hillary Clinton: A bowl off..

JAPAN TIMES
XX HORROR CAPTURED ON FILM XX
Brutal footage of annual Taiji dolphin slaughter has been captured by group .. feature length footage of brutal slaughter is slated to be released as documentary this summer.. The U.S. conservation group Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) captured the footage.. The story details the way the meat is gathered and sold, plus points out that the mercury content far exceeds legal limitations in Japan.. JAPAN TIMES on how the massive blackout of the shocking footage is finished .. the truth is now out. From the story:
Captured dolphins were filmed writhing in pain as Taiji whalers speared them repeatedly or cracked their spines with spiked weapons. Stricken dolphins are also shown thrashing about wildly, blood pouring from their wounds until they finally succumbed. Meanwhile, a number of dolphin trainers and officials from the Taiji Whale Museum are shown cooperating in the slaughter — some even laughing — as the killing cove's bloodied, ruby-red water swept round into the adjacent capture cove. But perhaps the most iconic scene is one in which a baby dolphin leaps to its death on the rocks after its mother is killed. This really was a surreal and incredibly sad sight to see. OPS team leader Louie Psihoyos, a world-renowned photographer formerly with National Geographic Magazine, and members of his group, conducted the extraordinary covert operation with the daring elan and minute precision of a military-style, special-forces mission.
Some more footage that you can watch--at your own discretion..

(AP Photo/Bill Waugh) And the nominee will be... Al Gore!?
Insiders begin trial balloon for possible Al Gore nomination. The UK TELEGRAPH is sourcing "former Gore aides" in its story about top Democrats hoping for Gore to emerge as a compromise candidate.. Last week, columnist Joe Klein dropped the story in TIME magazine practically asking for Dems to nominate the former Vice President.. One Democrat told the Schmuckraker: "All they have to do is say, re-elect Gore," and "he wins." "It will be such a battle cry to Democrats everywhere. Like remember the Alamo, in this case, remember 2000." While it may not be that simple, the Democratic race for the presidency hasn't been simple, either. Al Gore all over again.. Hopefully it won't come down to Florida. The TELEGRAPH reporting:
"Tim Mahoney, a Democrat congressman from Florida, said last week: "If it goes into the convention, don't be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket." This suggests the party would accept a Gore-Clinton or a Gore-Obama pairing."
Heads up. Trial balloons are floating above..

THE EARTH GOES DARK ON THE SUNDAY MORNING SIDEWALK

People in my town are getting over their Clinton filled day yesterday.. I am sure by the time the 2nd Street Pub the Hibernian House let them loose at 2am, they quickly forgot that 30,000 people were in Girardville.. probably also forgot they saw a former president.. It was real.

But life goes on. Some random news links from the world around us..

I have the feeling that ancient politicians and rulers didn't want this truth known: The lives of ancient Egyptians were harsh, regardless of the images of wealth.. But those pyramids still stand. A triumph for humanity on the backs and bones of everyday humans..

I strongly opposed China being the site of the Olympics.. even more so now with the unrest in Tibet. (Unrest is a kind word for the brutal treatment of the monks by China).. German chancellor Angela Merkel said she will not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics due to Tibet crisis. She is the first world leader to take this stand.. President Bush, where are you!?
