The strange murder/suicide of Chris Benoit and family has raised more questions than answers about the state of professional wrestling. It's also caused a very interesting mystery on Wikipedia.. who exactly posted the news of Benoit's wife being dead hours before it was actually released to the media that it occured.. why was the poster only miles from WWE headquarters?
The WWE had a package ready for Monday night.. the day after the weekend of the bloody massacre.. The next day the world came to learn of how the ill-fated fate actually took place: It was the wrestler that killed his own wife and child and then hung himself..
A
number of voices have come out declaring that Vince McMahon ruined wrestling ..
He certainly changed it. He brought "suck it" into the venacular of American society in the 90s.. his rude and ignorant creation of Stone Cold Steve Austin led a generation of seniors in high school to give the finger to society and proclaim they just "whooped" someone's ass..
But wrestling has always gone with the times. Is it the times that create a more violent wrestling character? Is it a reflection of society? Or does it further agitate the senses into becoming a less than moral person?
You may recall, if you are a wrestling fan--I am former... pre-20 year fan--that
June's story on wrestling was that Vince McMahon was possibly killed in a car bomb.. .. perhaps with the latest news from London--plus the Benoit death--to continue this latest twisted twist in wrestling was be out of taste to say the least..
While McMahon will be able to easily change the storyline of the fictious world of professional sports entertainment, it's going to be impossible to alter the landscape of the wrestling world after Chris Benoit's actions. Wrestling may be filled with stories of tragic endings for tragic figures--maybe they get too big to handle the fame; maybe they think their world is real.. But even with the number of unfortunate accidents and deaths of wrestling stars, the story of Benoit is quite different.
McMahon's tribute to Benoit hours after the bodies were discovered was an embarassment. When news broke that Benoit was the killer, McMahon tried to apologize for the tribute show.
Now Steve Austin's ex-wife has come out swinging.. She is making allegations that Austin was a steroid abusing wife beater. She also states that the WWE, then the WWF before the World Wildlife Fund had their say, told her to keep silent about the incidents.
There is also intrigue over what role steroids played in Benoit's actions.. While no excuse for anything he did, some wonder if it was due to 'roid rage'.. And did McMahon, and the WWE, allow steroids to be openly used to make stars bigger and bigger.. and bigger?
Questions with little answers today.
What is clear, though, is the questions will persist. Just today, as a matter of fact,
news broke that DEA agents raided Benoit's doctor's house.
UPI is reporting that the Wikipedia poster is being questioned by authorities in relation to the Benoit case. The "concidence" of posting news about a death no one knew about hours before it actually was known is troubling to say the least..
Mystery also persists as to whether or not Benoit's 7-year-old son had Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation often accompanied by autism...
What is known though: Bibles were placed next to both Benoit's wife and son after the murders. Benoit hung himself.
McMahon hasn't handled this the best yet. And there are going to be more questions coming..
